This is a large handled basket made from carbonized bamboo.

Some may be familiar with white bamboo,
which is made by sun-drying or boiling freshly cut green Madake bamboo to draw out its natural oils and color.

Carbonized bamboo is made by placing this white bamboo in a high-pressure steamer
and applying heat and pressure for about 15–20 minutes.

This process removes even more moisture and oil,
giving the bamboo a deep amber tone richer than white bamboo.

Although this treatment was originally developed to prevent mold and insects—
the natural enemies of bamboo—carbonization gives even newly made pieces a somewhat vintage appearance.

On this page, we introduce a basket named “Large Handled Basket.”

The entire basket is woven using a technique called “sukashi-ajiro-ami.”
While regular ajiro-ami has a tight weave, this version is woven with gaps between the strips.
The handle consists of three bamboo strips: a wide strip in the center and two strips alongside it, one on each side. It is fastened with bamboo nails and then bound with rattan, securing it firmly to the basket body.
You may occasionally notice marks that look like stains or spots on the surface of the bamboo. These occur naturally and are not considered defects. Please be aware of this.
The handle is made from wide, thick bamboo bent to an angle of nearly 90 degrees. Its form conveys a sense of bamboo’s strength.
The three bamboo strips that form the handle are firmly bound together at the center with rattan. The rattan is smooth to the touch and feels comfortable in the hand.
This is the underside of the basket. The sukashi-ajiro-ami weave extends across the base as well.
The bamboo nodes are grouped near the center and at both ends of the base to help the basket sit steadily. As the height of the nodes varies from one piece of bamboo to another, the basket may wobble slightly, but it becomes steady when items are placed inside.
Decorative rattan wrapping is applied to protect the four corners, which are prone to damage when bumped.
This shows how it looks when carried by an adult woman. We think this gives a good sense of just how large the basket is.
With an outer width of about 57 cm (22.44″), it is a basket of a size not often seen today.

For example, you could use it to carry your everyday work tools.
If you work in landscaping, you could use it to carry your tools together.

For those who often travel by car, it can also serve as a roomy shopping basket.

Of course, it can also be used indoors as a spacious storage basket that doubles as part of the decor.
You could use it to keep tools together or store a treasured collection.

With its rectangular shape, it fits neatly in a corner of a room or against a wall.

The basket also measures about 30 cm (11.81″) in outer depth, giving it generous proportions.

The richly toned carbonized bamboo contrasts with the white rattan.
The basket has a distinctive atmosphere unlike any other, and there is something imposing about its presence.

Please check the dimensions carefully before placing your order.

Beyond Categories: A New Approach to Bamboo Craft

In the world of bamboo craft, items are often labeled—
“practical goods,” “folk art,” “souvenirs,” or “traditional crafts”—
defined by the maker or by how they are used.

But there is a couple who create bamboo work that goes beyond such categories,
pursuing a broader, more open vision of what bamboo can be.

They began as self-taught artisans,
later refining their skills at the Oita Prefectural Bamboo Craft Training Center in Beppu.
After graduating, they spent several years in workshops across Oita Prefecture,
steadily honing their craft by fulfilling order after order.

Their work is not shaped by vague ideas or trendy concepts,
but grounded in solid technique—developed through repetition and discipline.

Their baskets reflect careful consideration:
the choice of bamboo suited to each piece, the balance of color and shape,
and the usability that fits modern life.

What they create—each “bamboo thing,” in its own way—has a quiet joy.
A lightness, free from pressure, that makes it feel both thoughtful and delightfully approachable.
