This is a basket bag made from carbonized bamboo.

Some may be familiar with white bamboo,
which is made by boiling and sun-drying freshly cut green Madake bamboo to draw out its natural oils and color.

Carbonized bamboo is made by placing this white bamboo in a high-pressure steamer
and applying heat and pressure for about 15–20 minutes.

This process removes even more moisture and oil,
giving the bamboo a deep amber tone richer than white bamboo.

Although this treatment was originally developed to prevent mold and insects—
the natural enemies of bamboo—carbonization gives even newly made pieces a somewhat vintage appearance.

On this page, we introduce a large one-handle basket bag.

The entire basket is tightly woven using the ajiro-ami technique. It is carefully woven from bamboo strips whose outer surfaces have been polished. Each strip has variations in shade, giving the basket a natural look and feel.
The rim is made from wide, thick bamboo strips and is securely wrapped and bound with rattan.
The handle is also made from thick carbonized bamboo. It is fastened with bamboo nails and then bound with rattan, securing it firmly to the basket body. The lower part of the handle is finished with decorative rattan weaving, which also serves as reinforcement.
The handle is carefully and tightly wrapped with rattan, leaving no slack.
The inside has the same amber-toned appearance as the outside. Its box shape makes it easy to store items inside.
Three reinforcing bamboo strips are securely fitted to the base. Its sturdy construction allows you to carry it with confidence even when it is full.
This shows how it looks when held by an adult woman.
It has ample room for carrying items, but the basket itself is very light for its size.

As an everyday shopping basket, it is just the right size for one or two days’ worth of groceries.
It could also come in handy for carrying items you want to keep level, such as tofu and fruit.

You could also take it along when buying enough bread or prepared food for the whole family.

Another option is to use it as a work bag.
It seems large enough to hold a packed lunch as well as your work essentials.

Its texture and color make it easy to pair with any outfit.

Indoors, it could also serve as a large flower vase with a container for water placed inside.
With its rectangular shape, it fits neatly in a corner of a room or against a wall.

With its handle positioned lengthwise,
the basket is less likely to bump against your legs as you walk, making it easy to carry.

The richly toned carbonized bamboo contrasts with the white rattan.
Its distinctive appearance, unlike that of other bamboo, catches the eye.

Please check the dimensions carefully before placing your order.

Beyond Categories: A New Approach to Bamboo Craft

In the world of bamboo craft, items are often labeled—
“practical goods,” “folk art,” “souvenirs,” or “traditional crafts”—
defined by the maker or by how they are used.

But there is a couple who create bamboo work that goes beyond such categories,
pursuing a broader, more open vision of what bamboo can be.

They began as self-taught artisans,
later refining their skills at the Oita Prefectural Bamboo Craft Training Center in Beppu.
After graduating, they spent several years in workshops across Oita Prefecture,
steadily honing their craft by fulfilling order after order.

Their work is not shaped by vague ideas or trendy concepts,
but grounded in solid technique—developed through repetition and discipline.

Their baskets reflect careful consideration:
the choice of bamboo suited to each piece, the balance of color and shape,
and the usability that fits modern life.

What they create—each “bamboo thing,” in its own way—has a quiet joy.
A lightness, free from pressure, that makes it feel both thoughtful and delightfully approachable.
