This basket is woven from nypa palm, a plant that grows in the mangrove forests of Thailand.

Many of the weavers are women in their 40s to 70s, though a few men are also involved.
As with Krajood basketry, there are not many weavers among the younger generation.
Even so, the appeal of natural material products such as these is now being recognized again in Thailand, and we were told that more young people are beginning to choose baskets.
On this page, we introduce a deep open weave basket in two sizes: M and L.

Nypa palm allows air to circulate well, and the open weave gives the basket an airy appearance.
It can also be used to store snacks or dried foods, or to keep a tea set.
We also recommend it for use in shop displays or as a basket for displaying merchandise.

Although nypa palm is resistant to water,
please use the basket indoors in a well-ventilated area, away from places where humidity tends to build up.
Light and airy, yet with ample capacity, this nypa palm basket is easy to use around the kitchen.
We hope you enjoy using it in whatever way suits you.

About Nypa Palm Craft in Thailand
Along the western coast of the Malay Peninsula in southern Thailand, there are many wetlands with soft, muddy ground.
There are also many mangrove forests in the brackish areas where river water and seawater mix.
Nypa palm, a member of the palm family, grows on the landward side of these mangrove forests.
Compared with other palms that grow in freshwater, it is stronger and more flexible.
Nypa palm is fibrous, lightweight, and strong.
Because it is breathable and resistant to wind and rain, it is also used as roofing and wall material in regions with abundant vegetation.
“Nypa” is a Filipino word meaning nypa palm.
Locally, nypa palm leaves are woven onto bamboo frames and used to thatch roofs and make walls.
In Thailand, nypa palm can be harvested year-round and is used to make baskets, trays, scoops, and other items.
The items introduced here are made in Trang Province, on the western side of the Malay Peninsula in southern Thailand.
