This is a tree-shaped object woven using walnut bark, Akebi vine, and grapevine.
The maker is Kaoru Saito, who has long been working with vine and bark crafts in Yamagata.
She gathers all three materials herself, creating designs that feel uniquely her own.

The form of the tree is shaped with Akebi vine, combined with wider strips of walnut bark.
On closer look, fine strands of grapevine are also woven into the structure.

The walnut bark shows both the rustic character of its outer surface and the rich dark brown of the inner side,
thoughtfully brought into view.

At the top of the tree, a small grapevine detail appears like a star.

The combination of three materials offers a richness that continues to hold your gaze.
It may even evoke the way plants intertwine in the forest where Kaoru gathers her materials.
With its natural gradation of colors and freeform weaving,
it remains engaging no matter how long you look at it.
It may find a place in your living room, by the entrance, or as a seasonal decoration.
Several pieces of this tree are available.
As each one is made using a freeform weave, the patterns will vary from piece to piece.
For online orders, we will select one for you from our current stock.
We kindly ask for your understanding in advance.
We hope you will enjoy it in your daily life.

Forms that captivate, born from the rich materials of Yamagata
Using a variety of mountain materials—Grapevine, walnut, Akebi, and Matatabi—
Kaoru Saito creates a succession of unique forms rarely seen elsewhere, as well as refined basketry that quietly draws the eye.
For many years, she has gone into the mountains herself to gather materials,
carrying out every step of the process from the very beginning.
In fact, Kaoru is also a highly skilled maker capable of producing finely woven Grapevine tote baskets of exceptional quality.
The accessories and ornaments she creates from multiple materials all carry a sense of considered beauty,
while also reflecting playfulness and thoughtful attention to the user.
She has a deep understanding of each material, and is also a user herself, incorporating baskets, accessories,
and small objects into her daily life.
Listening closely to the voices of those who use her work,
she continues to explore how pieces can be made more comfortable, beautiful, and enjoyable to use.
