Japan is home to a wide variety of bamboo species, each used to create baskets, strainers, and everyday tools suited to the region where it grows. Madake, Hachiku, Shinodake, and Suzutake are just a few examples, each with its own unique characteristics and traditions of craftsmanship.

Beyond Japan, bamboo has long been an essential material throughout Taiwan and many other parts of Asia. Shaped by local landscapes and ways of life, bamboo crafts from each region have developed their own distinctive character.

Here, we introduce baskets, strainers, and everyday tools made from bamboo, with a focus on Japan.
